Reykjavík Summer 2013

While I spent a brief week in Iceland this summer, I was based in Reykjavík. I had heard that it is “the smallest big city in the world” and it really is. Most things you’d wanna do and places you’d want to see are walking distance. Good, because busses in the city go infrequently (at least for someone who is used to a subway running every ten minutes).
Anyway, I went exploring on foot a lot from Hallgrímskirkja to Perla, along Saebraut and beyond, all the way to the lighthouse in Seltjarnarnes. To the ferry terminal to go out to Viðey Island and of course up and down Laugavegur. I enjoyed stunning views of the sea, saw the city from above and Mount Esja from afar.
The city is quite lively, many bars and cafés invite you to sit down and meet friends, there is live music everywhere and in summer it won’t be dark for long. The sparse lava landscape you can find just outside the city is contrasted by colorful houses and even more colorful grafitti everywhere. Come and take a look.
